The maritime history of Rotterdam goes back for centuries; from a fishing village in the 13th century to nowadays one of the biggest and busiest ports in the world. In 2008 the Maasvlakte 2 project started. About 2.000 hectares (4.500 acres) will be reclaimed from the North Sea for industrial and recreational purposes. This extension of the harbour will keep Rotterdam in the top of worldharbours. Futureland will give you all information on this huge project. Rotterdam is full of maritime activities; from the Maritime Museum to the Harbour Museum and from a Spido harbourcruise to the maritime history of Rotterdam on SS Rotterdam, former flagship of Holland America Line. The Rotterdam Port Experience is an interactive meet & greet with our harbour. Splashtours (new in 2010!) shows the city in an amphibious bus and takes you right into the river! A unique and exciting experience. During the World Port Days in the first weekend of September you will be able to have a look behind the harbour scenes, including visits to various industrial complexes and harbourterminals.
